Anxiety Disorders
Some refer to these as Stress disorders. These include: Anxiety attacks, Panic attacks, Panic Disorders, Phobia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obessive Compulsive Disorders(OCD)because they all anxiety or excessive stress based conditions.
Anxiety
If you think that you are suffering from anxiety, you should always have the condition diagnosed by your GP (General Practitioner) as often anxiety is linked with depression. It is also essential that you always check with your doctor before making any adjustments to medication before or after any therapy you might have.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is often caused by excessive stress and worry about some negative thing that could happen in the future. It is different to fear which relates to the past.
The most common anxiety disorder is what is know as the "Generalised Anxiety Disorder". It is characterised by excessive worry about everything in the person's life. After a period of intense worry the person may begin to believe that life is uncontrollable. Some people are better than others in handling stress.
Feelings of anxiety and stress is a normal response to stress to pressure. People have to balance life work, home and family on an ongoing basis. The pressures and demands could get intense and intolerable when it accumalates and lead to severe anxiety.. Anxiety only becomes a problem when it is experienced intensely both and it continually interferes with our lives.
The emotional basis for Anxiety is fear. The physical symptoms of anxiety may be quite distressing as the sypmproms include increased heart rate, rapid rate of breathing, sweating, numbness in arms and legs, shaking and light headedness. The person may feel that they have no control over the symptoms and often find it difficult to overcome it on their own. If the anxiety is not dealt with in a timely manner, it could even develop into panic attacks or a phobia.
Anxiety based conditions are one of the most common issues that are dealt with by Psychotherapists.
I use a combination of therapies as well as teach you self hypnosis and tools and strategies to enable you to mange your stress better. Depending on the cause of your excessive stress, you may need to make changes in to your life style. So the session with you would also include coaching as well as therapy.
Panic disorder
Often the unresolved anxiety could develop into panic attacks. Panic attacks consist of severe anxiety with physical and psychological symptoms including the general symptoms of anxiety and often with hyperventilation. Some people experience intence fear or dread such as dying (because of the physiological symptoms of inability to breath properly), having a heart attack or losing control. Panic
disorder is often common in depression, GAD or agoraphobia. In panic disorder, panic attacks occur on a frequent basis and quite unexpectedly with seemingly no apparent causes.
A phobia is an inappropriate and excessive fear to a situation or object that causes it and cannot be explained. The person would avoid the feared situation or object at all cost, in order to reduce the anxiety.
Some phobias can be with specific objects or situations or something which may have developed as a result of a traumatic event. Examples of specific phobias include, animal (eg spiders, snakes, birds, dogs) Driving, virtigo, blood, injections, social phobia.
OCD -Obsessive-compulsive disorder
While some of us do minor obsessional behaviours, OCD is not a common disorder. It often begins in adolescence and ignored and usually when the behaviour becomes severe and more obvious in later years, people seek help from GP.
OCD is is often also linked with depression . The symptoms include fear based obsessional thoughts about security -locking doors, dirt, germs, or of some harm happening to them or others if the obsessional behavious is not carried out. More they try to stop the behaviour, more anxiety they feel. It can severlely interfere with their lives and those closest to them.
PTSD - Post traumatic stress disorder
The symptoms of PTSD tends to follow several weeks or motnths after a severe stressful or traumatic event and can last for years. Symptoms often include nightmares, flashbacks (vivid memories - sights and sounds and feeling of the event), avoidance behaviours and constantly being on edge. The person may often experience anxiety, panic disorder, depression, guilt (of surviving) and dissociated from their emotions.
I usually use a Breakthrough Therapy Process(TM) followed by hourly sessions (should the client needs additional help) for most anxiety disorders. I also teach Qi Gong exersices and self hypnosis to re-enforce the therapy.
